WHAT IS SMUDGING?
Many native Indian tribes of the US and Canada traditionally perform a purification ritual known as 'smudging' to clear the atmosphere of negative vibrations and fill the environment with positive, uplifting energies. Smudge Sticks are typically bundled wands made of bound herbs such as White Sage or Sweetgrass, used for smudging purposes - though other herbs and botanicals such as Palo Santo wood and Cedar leaves have also been used for this purpose.
Selenite is a peaceful, calming crystal, prized by crystal healers for purification. The ideal energy tool for all types of cleansing because of its pure vibration, which does not need to be 'recharged'. It is believed that Selenite is one of the few minerals that has the healing ability to quickly unblock stagnant and negative energy, removing energy blockages to create a flow of energy throughout the body.
The small rough White Selenite wand included in this set will vary in size, but is typically 7-8cm in length and generally at least as large as the piece in the photos - the prayer card in the pics is postcard sized, for reference. Being completely natural and hand cut, each piece will vary in size, shape and texture and will be unique in its own special way.
WHITE SAGE SMUDGE STICK
SAGE has been traditionally used to purify the mind, body and spirit before praying, to cleanse the atmosphere and disperse negativity - sage is believed by many to be a masculine plant that can reduce or eliminate negative energy; some place sage at doorways for protection against evil. Today, it can be used to purify homes, offices or other spaces; the smell of sage will remind you of the desert and the sacredness of life.
To use a smudge stick, remove the yarn binding the stick and place the stick in a heatproof dish or abalone shell filled with sand or ashes, to keep it upright. Light the tip of the bundle on fire until the Smudge Stick catches, then blow out the flame to allow the herbs to smoulder and smoke, sending sweet fragrant smoke into the air. To extinguish, invert into the sand until the embers are out. Never leave a lit smudge stick unattended.
PALO SANTO STICKS ('Holy Wood')
Palo Santo means 'Holy Wood' in Spanish. The tree (Bursera graveolens) is from the same family as Frankincense & Myrrh, but is primarily native to South America. Using the burning timber as incense has traditionally been used against bad energy, or for good luck. The oil was used during the time of the Incas for its reputed spiritual purifying properties, and charcoal from the burnt wood has also been used for ritual smudging. Both the smoke and oil have been used for centuries for medical purposes, and the smoke is even used as an insect (mosquito) deterrent. Our Palo Santo sticks have a gorgeous, rich scent, with an undercurrent of frankincense, to which it is related.
Each stick is approx 10-11cm in length, though do be aware that they may vary in size and width as they are each hand-chipped from solid timber - some may be narrower than others. To burn, light the end until it is alight - burn for no longer than a minute then blow out / extinguish and allow the smoke to smoulder, in the same way you might use a smudge stick. Use a heat-proof dish or similar - if holding the stick do take all care as it will remain hot for some time. (See our Abalone Shell dishes and other censers, listed separately). Each stick can be re-lit many times - either straight away, or saved for later once it has cooled - unlike traditional sage smudge sticks that generally must be used up in the one sitting.
As well as for incense or smudging purposes, smoke from Palo Santo wood is also well-known as a deterrent for mosquitoes and other insects.
When smudging, White Sage is traditionally used FIRST to rid the area of negativity, and followed by Palo Santo as it attracts positive energy and aids in healing after the negativity has been banished by the sage.
ABALONE SHELL - OPTIONAL (CHOOSE FROM THE DROP-DOWN OPTIONS MENU)
Abalone shells are traditionally used as a natural bowl to burn sage and other botanicals for smudging etc. Our Abalone Shells are a product of Mexico, and current sizes for our MEDIUM shells vary between around 7 - 9cm - a lovely size to hold in the palm of your hand during your smudging ritual, though as always if holding your shell or resting a burning stick in the shell we'd recommend adding a layer of sand or earth to insulate the heat and protect the shell. See our other listings for larger sized shells.
